Favorite book or a book that changed your mindset and why it did?
Chinese writer Yu Hua’s work To Live, I believe there’s a published English version. This book tells the fate of an ordinary person in the historical background of our country, from the 1940s to the 1980s, Xu Fugui’s life and family endured various hardships due to civil war, political movements, and great social changes. In the end, all his family, including his parents, wife, son, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson, died one after another, leaving only the old man and his old cow depending on each other for survival. The style of this novel is plain and calm, telling the story of an ordinary person’s misfortune and rough fate in the era of rapid change. With a calm tone, the author reveals the meaning of life and the value of existence. This book has helped me eliminate my anxieties, and no matter how many bad things there are in the world, I am more determined to love life and love the world.
Your most extreme experience so far in your life/biggest challenge in your life?
In the winter when I was ten years old, I fell into a river. I couldn’t swim, and I was wearing a very thick cotton coat, but I flapped to the shore, grabbed a branch, and climbed up with difficulty. It’s a miracle. I don’t know if some God has blessed me. For I heard the old man say that some other child had fallen into the river and been drowned. From then on, I told myself to be a kind person.
