In this blog post, we explore five Asian words to call you a \u201cforeigner\u201d or \u201coutsider\u201d, as well as the connotations and meaning behind these words.<\/p>\n

1. Japan\u2019s \u201cgaijin\u201d<\/h2>\n

Over the years, the term \u201cgaijin\u201d has developed and been used to refer to Western foreigners, but this word tends to lean on the cynical side and has negative connotations. It is therefore typically avoided by officials as well as by the Japanese media and broadcasters.<\/p>\n

There are many professional sports players who, as foreigners in Asia, come to Japan to play sports such as baseball and professional wrestling. These foreigners are typically referred to as \u201cgaikokujin\u201d (\u5916\u56fd\u4eba), which is translated into \u201cforeign country\u201d and \u201cperson\u201d and since the Second World War, this term has been used as the official term for foreigners in Asia.<\/p>\n

2. Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Malaysia – \u201cang mo\u201d<\/h2>\n

In Chinese, \u201cang mo\u201d (\u7d05\u6bdb) or \u201cang moh\u201d, is a term that is literally translated as \u201cred-haired person\u201d and is used to describe white people of European origin.<\/p>\n

It is commonly perceived by Caucasians as derogatory, although it is commonly used in some newspapers, film, and in television.<\/p>\n

The word\u2019s usage dates back to the 17th century Dutch East India Company\u2019s presence in Asia, and has historical significance.<\/p>\n

It is also used in a derogatory fashion to refer to Chinese people who cannot read Chinese, as they have been perceived as having abandoned their culture.<\/p>\n

3. \u201dBule\u201d in Indonesia<\/h2>\n

\"asianIf you are Caucasian and of Western origins traveling to Indonesia and you hear the word \u201cbule\u201d, you should be aware that it means a \u201cforeigner\u201d, a \u201cnon-Indonesian national\u201d, and is generally referred to describe white\/Caucasian people.<\/p>\n

Visiting street markets, you might find that street vendors call you \u201cbule\u201d to grab your attention, but since many Westerners find this term offensive, there\u2019s been a development of simply being called \u201cMister\u201d by these affable, enterprising individuals.<\/p>\n

The etymology of the word \u201cbule\u201d can be traced back to the 19th century and possibly even earlier, and it was used to refer to the word \u201cwhite\u201d when describing buffalo. While there\u2019s been progression in dictionaries since 1869, the word is also commonly used to refer to an albino person.<\/p>\n

4. Thailand\u2019s \u201cfarang\u201d<\/h2>\n

While its usage is widespread in South and South-East Asia, \u201cfarang\u201d (\u0e1d\u0e23\u0e31\u0e48\u0e07) is a common Thai word to refer to white people, irrespective of their origin.<\/p>\n

People of African origin are called \u201cfarang dam\u201d (\u0e1d\u0e23\u0e31\u0e48\u0e07\u0e14\u0e33) or \u201cblack farang\u201d to distinguish them from white people. This practice began during the Vietnam war when military bases were established and maintained in Thailand by the US.<\/p>\n

Today, this practice continues in the capital of Thailand, Bangkok.<\/p>\n

In terms of etymology, \u201cfarang\u201d has Persian origins, which refer to the Germanic tribes that ruled Western Europe.<\/p>\n

There are several variations of the word \u201cfarang\u201d to refer to Caucasian people and, in most cases, these are derogatory.<\/p>\n

5. \u201dLaowai\u201d in Chinese<\/h2>\n

\u201cLaowai\u201d (\u8001\u5916) in Chinese is a term that\u2019s used to describe foreigners of non-Asian origin and ethnicity.<\/p>\n

It can be used to call foreigners such in affectionate ways.<\/p>\n

However, during the period building up to and including the 2008 Beijing Olympics, there was a massive governmental drive to avoid the use of such terminology in official, media, and other communication to avoid offending visitors to the country.<\/p>\n
