But each country has its own rules and subtleties, even in such simple matters as going to a restaurant. How do we behave in a restaurant abroad and how do we place an order? Let\u2019s find out!<\/p>\n<p>Japanese cuisine is one of the most popular in the world and is continuously gaining more fame as it is considered to be not only beautiful but healthy as well. However, finding a Japanese restaurant with an English-speaking staff is unexpectedly hard. Surely, you can go with the flow and try to place an order using gestures or basic English. Or you can try placing an order in Japanese with our Japanese phrases guide from this article!<\/p>\n<h2>Entering a Japanese restaurant the Japanese way<\/h2>\n<p>You can notice small shelves when entering some restaurants. It might be surprising, but they are usually designed for shoes. Therefore, it is only natural that you take off your shoes, placing them in one of the drawers before you enter the restaurant.<br \/>\nWhen entering, be ready to be met by the staff, whose job is to show you to your place. This is a practice even in small restaurants. In diners like McDonald\u2019s, however, you are free to choose your own spot.<\/p>\n<p>As you get into the restaurant you will be met with the Japanese greeting \u201cIrasshaimase!\u201d (\u3044\u3089\u3063\u3057\u3083\u3044\u307e\u305b!). This is the phrase Japanese people use to meet customers in all shops and restaurants in Japan. A question that might follow is \u201cNan-mei-sama desu ka?\u201d (\u4f55\u540d\u3055\u307e\u3067\u3059\u304b?). If you hear this, it means that the staff asks for the number of guests. You can either combine a number with the Japanese suffix for a person (\u4eba which is read \u2018nin\u2019 or \u2018ri\u2019). Also, \u540d (mei) is commonly used along with \u4eba E.g. Ni mei desu (\u4e8c\u540d\u3067\u3059) Alternatively, you can show the number with your fingers as kids do. This is something Japanese people often do, so don\u2019t worry \u2013 nobody is going to judge you.<\/p>\n<h2>Japanese phrases for ordering food<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stopasia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Japanese-phrases1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Japanese Phrases\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>When you are ready to order, you can call your waiter by loudly saying \u201cSumimasen!\u201d (\u3059\u307f\u307e\u305b\u3093), which literally translates to \u201cexcuse me\u201d. As we have already written in the previous article, you shouldn\u2019t be scared to raise your voice. Speaking loudly is not considered rude in a Japanese restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>When your waiter reaches your table they will as if you\u2019re ready with your order, which will sound like this: \u201cGo ch\u016bmon wa okimaridesu ka\u201d (\u3054\u6ce8\u6587\u306f\u304a\u6c7a\u307e\u308a\u3067\u3059\u304b). To make an order in Japanese, you will need to name the dish you would like to order and the number of such dishes. For example:<br \/>\nEnglish phrase: Three tempura dishes, please.<br \/>\nJapanese phrase: Tenpura se tto, mittsu kudasai (\u5929\u3077\u3089\u30bb\u30c3\u30c8\u30013\u3064\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044).<br \/>\n\u201cKudasai\u201d means \u201cplease\u201d and it\u2019s the exact word to use when you want to ask for something nicely and politely. In the case you can\u2019t pronounce or read the name of the dish, you can just point at it on the menu and say \u201cKore o kudasai\u201d (\u3053\u308c\u3092\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044).<\/p>\n<h2>What to say when your order is late<\/h2>\n<p>There are people who consider the service in Japanese restaurants one of the best in the world. However, it is still possible for your order to get slowed down even in a Japanese restaurant. If you\u2019re waiting for a long time, wondering what happened to your food, then you can use this simple phrase:<br \/>\nEnglish phrase: The tempura I ordered hasn\u2019t come yet\u2026<br \/>\nJapanese phrase: Ch\u016bmon shite ita tenpura ga mada kite inai ndesukedo\u2026 (\u6ce8\u6587\u3057\u3066\u3044\u305f\u5929\u3077\u3089\u304c\u307e\u3060\u6765\u3066\u3044\u306a\u3044\u3093\u3067\u3059\u3051\u3069\u2026)<br \/>\nWhere you should switch the underlined words with the name of the dish you have ordered.<\/p>\n<h2>The language you need to ask for the bill<\/h2>\n<p>When you\u2019re ready to pay, you can loudly say the already known phrase \u201cSumimasen!\u201d When the waiter comes to your table use the phrase (Okaikei onegaishimasu, \u304a\u4f1a\u8a08\u304a\u9858\u3044\u3057\u307e\u3059) to ask for your bill. In Japanese eating places, the bill is usually left on a shelf under the table or by your side. After receiving it, you should go to the cashier, who is usually located by the entrance. Don\u2019t forget that most Japanese restaurants work with cash. It is also very important to know that Japanese are not used to tips. As strange as it might sound \u2013 don\u2019t leave a tip on the table.
